When I look at this photo I see depression so acute on the woman’s face I imagine she’s now completely numb with misery and barely notices what’s going on around her. I see her moving around like a robot, there’s nothing for the kids to eat today and there won’t be anything for them to eat tomorrow, so what’s the point?
It reminds me of a book by John Steinbeck called ‘The Grapes of Wrath’, written a long time ago about some wonderful people.
Over the last 9 months, the stock market has had a depressing affect on people all over the world. Talking about the stock market might make you assume that I’m well off but you’d be wrong, I wasn’t that clever, I just have a couple of close friends who confide in me and they tell me that about a third of their initial share port folios have been wiped out, some more daring investors having lost much more.
This week a rich man in England, when he knew he was financially ruined, calmly went out and shot his dogs then all his beloved horses and then went looking for his wife and teenage daughter. After he had shot them all, he set his mansion on fire and then killed himself.
It’s a silent tragedy happening now all around us but you probably don’t know about it unless you are one of the many who have suffered a severe financial blow this year. It could be the devaluation of your house or your shares have dropped considerably.
The people John Steinbeck wrote about are still alive and well, we are here in abundance, not ready to throw in the towel or jump out of a skyscraper, we’re going to cop it sweet (an old Aussie saying) and get on with it.
Tomorrow is another day.

It's terrible when people are financially ruined through no fault of their own, but a few people live well beyond their means. Apparently this tragedy in England (the man shooting his family and pets) was a lot to do with the fact that he'd been spending money he hadn't got for years. He'd already had the tax man after him for years when He bought this massive mansion that he couldn't afford, along with the lifestyle that he yearned for. What a horrible tragic ending...
